Notes from all over, Christmas Edition

Remember the Abyss? Of course you do, and apparently it's on tap at Waddell's, and Hill's, the Elk and the Two Seven should have it soon. So that's kind of awesome.

Other than that we're taking a break until the new year. If you think you'll miss our edifying musing, you can always come back and relive your favorite posts every day though! Plus we'll launch two new projects in January, so stay tuned.

The West Wing of the White House

There are few places in Post Falls that would have received "legendary" status in the region, but if one restaurant comes close, it's the White House Grill. For those not familiar with the spot, it features an Eastern Mediterranean style menu with emphasis on garlic. In some sense the legend might have gone a little overboard. The food is garlic-y, certainly, but not to a point that would be too atypical for certain Mediterranean areas.

And now the West Wing, its Spokane location, is open. It's pretty much identical to its Post Falls cousin, so if you're a fan of the spot you'll definitely be happy here. Of course, if you did not like the White House, then your opinion won't be swayed by the West Wing either.

We, as it goes, are fans. The food is affordable and tasty. Start of with some Turkish cigars—they're surprisingly light and a great opener for the meal—and pick any garlic-y dish you feel like. I went with the standard gyro which, while not super exciting, had some nice balanced flavors. The thinly cut meat was surprisingly delicately spiced, as was the tzatziki sauce. You could definitely taste the garlic (easily, at that) but it never felt overpowering.

In fact, the spices on the accompanying fries might have been the biggest flavor bomb on the table. We're talking to a level where they were overpowering. Not awesome, but then again, neither were the fries themselves which felt like they had been frozen.

The French onion soup fared better, with a really nice broth and a kicking flavor of onions.

So despite some inconsistencies, the West Wing is very much recommended for anyone who likes big flavors. It's affordable, tasty, and the interiors—completely gutted and redone from (may it rest in peace) Lazy Bones—are welcoming. Definitely a good addition to the South Hill.
